Locus Coeruleus Activation

Meaning

Locus Coeruleus Activation refers to the heightened neuronal firing within the Locus Coeruleus (LC), a small nucleus in the brainstem that serves as the principal source of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine (noradrenaline) for the entire forebrain. Activation of the LC is a core component of the brain’s response to novelty, stress, vigilance, and arousal, playing a central role in modulating attention and cognitive flexibility. From a hormonal health perspective, the LC is intimately connected with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, initiating the body’s rapid fight-or-flight response through the release of norepinephrine. Dysregulation of this nucleus is implicated in anxiety disorders and chronic stress adaptation.
