Locus Coeruleus

Meaning

The Locus Coeruleus (LC) is a small, bilateral nucleus located in the brainstem, specifically within the pons, serving as the principal source of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine in the central nervous system. This nucleus plays a pivotal role in regulating the sleep-wake cycle, attention, arousal, and the acute stress response, thus influencing overall hormonal health and cognitive state. Its function is essential for maintaining vigilance and modulating the body’s reaction to perceived threats.
