Local Hyperthermia

Meaning

Local Hyperthermia is a therapeutic procedure that involves selectively raising the temperature of a small, targeted area of tissue, typically to a range between 40°C and 45°C, while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. In clinical oncology, this technique is predominantly used as an adjunct to conventional treatments like radiation therapy and chemotherapy, as the application of heat sensitizes cancer cells to these modalities. Outside of oncology, controlled local heating is also explored for its potential in treating chronic pain and improving localized circulation. The procedure is delivered using energy sources such as radiofrequency, microwave, or ultrasound waves.
