Local Androgen Synthesis

Meaning

Local Androgen Synthesis, also technically known as intracrinology, refers to the capacity of specific peripheral tissues, such as the skin, adipose tissue, or the prostate gland, to produce active androgens like dihydrotestosterone (DHT) directly from circulating precursor hormones. This process is distinct from the classic endocrine model where hormones are produced solely by major glands like the testes or adrenal glands. It fundamentally highlights the tissue-specific and highly localized regulation of androgen action, which can be a significant factor in localized hormonal conditions.
