Liver Elastography

Meaning

Liver elastography is a non-invasive medical imaging technique utilized to quantitatively measure the stiffness or elasticity of the liver parenchyma. Increased tissue stiffness is a reliable clinical surrogate for the degree of liver fibrosis or scarring, which is a common endpoint of chronic liver injury from various etiologies. This diagnostic tool provides crucial information for staging liver disease severity, monitoring the progression of conditions like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and assessing the response to therapeutic interventions. It offers a safe, repeatable alternative to the traditional liver biopsy.
