Liver Clock Metabolism

Meaning

Liver clock metabolism refers to the circadian-regulated, time-of-day-dependent function of the liver in processing nutrients, synthesizing proteins, and detoxifying compounds, which is governed by an intrinsic molecular clock within the hepatocytes. The liver clock, a peripheral oscillator, is crucial for coordinating systemic energy homeostasis, ensuring that metabolic pathways for glucose, lipid, and cholesterol processing are activated and suppressed in alignment with the feeding-fasting cycle. Disruption of this clock can lead to metabolic dysfunction and hepatic steatosis.
