Liraglutide

Meaning

Liraglutide is a synthetic analog of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1), a naturally occurring incretin hormone, used clinically for the management of type 2 diabetes and chronic weight management. As a long-acting GLP-1 Receptor Agonist, it mimics the action of native GLP-1, promoting glucose-dependent insulin secretion from the pancreas and suppressing inappropriate glucagon release. Its therapeutic efficacy in weight loss is primarily mediated by increasing satiety and slowing gastric emptying, which leads to reduced caloric intake. Liraglutide is a valuable pharmacological tool in the metabolic and hormonal health space.
