Liposuction

Meaning

Liposuction is a surgical procedure designed to contour the body by mechanically removing localized, subcutaneous fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. This cosmetic and reconstructive intervention is performed by inserting a small, hollow tube, known as a cannula, through small incisions and using a vacuum device to aspirate the adipose tissue. While effective for aesthetic shaping, it is not a primary treatment for obesity or metabolic syndrome, as it removes peripheral, not visceral, fat. Patients should be counseled that this procedure alters body composition but does not address underlying hormonal or systemic health issues.
