Lipoprotein(a)

Meaning

Lipoprotein(a), often denoted as Lp(a), is a specific, highly atherogenic lipoprotein particle that is structurally similar to low-density lipoprotein (LDL), but is uniquely distinguished by the covalent attachment of an additional protein called apolipoprotein(a). Elevated plasma concentrations of Lp(a) are considered an independent, and largely genetically determined, risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease.
