Lipoprotein Particle Number

Meaning

Lipoprotein Particle Number (LPN) is a clinical metric that quantifies the total concentration of circulating lipoprotein particles, specifically focusing on the number of apolipoprotein B (apoB) containing particles, which includes LDL, VLDL, and IDL particles. This measurement is considered a superior predictor of cardiovascular risk compared to traditional mass-based cholesterol measurements, as the number of atherogenic particles is the direct driver of plaque formation in the arterial wall. LPN provides a more precise assessment of an individual’s true atherogenic burden.
