Lipoprotein Clearance

Meaning

Lipoprotein clearance is the essential physiological process by which circulating lipoprotein particles, including VLDL remnants, intermediate-density lipoproteins (IDL), and low-density lipoproteins (LDL), are removed from the bloodstream. This process is predominantly mediated by the liver, which recognizes and internalizes these particles through specific cell-surface receptors, such as the LDL receptor. Efficient clearance is paramount for preventing the accumulation of atherogenic cholesterol and maintaining vascular health.
