Lipopolysaccharide Contamination

Meaning

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) contamination refers to the presence of these large molecules, which are major components of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, in a substance or environment intended for human use, such as pharmaceutical products or research reagents. LPS, also known as endotoxin, is a potent activator of the innate immune system, capable of triggering a severe inflammatory response, fever, and potentially septic shock in a clinical setting. Strict regulatory standards exist to ensure the absence of this pyrogenic contamination in injectable therapies.
