Lipophilic Statins

Meaning

Lipophilic Statins are a distinct pharmacological subclass of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors characterized by their high lipid solubility, which facilitates their easy passage across cell membranes via passive diffusion. This intrinsic fat-solubility enhances their uptake into hepatocytes, the primary site of action, but also allows for increased distribution into extra-hepatic tissues, including skeletal muscle and the central nervous system. Common examples, such as atorvastatin and simvastatin, are contrasted with their hydrophilic counterparts by this physiochemical property. This characteristic is a key determinant of their clinical and side-effect profile.
