Lipohypertrophy

Meaning

Lipohypertrophy is a localized clinical condition characterized by an abnormal accumulation of fat beneath the skin, specifically at sites of repeated subcutaneous injections, most commonly seen in individuals managing diabetes with insulin therapy. This tissue enlargement results in a firm, rubbery nodule or lump that can interfere significantly with the absorption of subsequently injected medication. It is a preventable complication of chronic injection therapy, underscoring the importance of proper injection technique and site rotation for effective hormonal management. The presence of lipohypertrophy can lead to unpredictable glucose control due to variable insulin absorption.
