Lipogranuloma

Meaning

A type of chronic inflammatory reaction that manifests clinically as a localized nodule or mass, characterized microscopically by the presence of fat necrosis surrounded by an aggregation of inflammatory cells. The primary cellular components are macrophages and foreign-body giant cells, which attempt to contain the irritant. This tissue reaction often occurs following localized trauma, the injection of oily substances, or certain fat grafting procedures, where free fatty acids are released into the surrounding tissue. In a clinical setting, it represents the body’s attempt to wall off and contain irritating, non-resorbable lipid material. While typically benign, these lesions can sometimes mimic more serious pathology, requiring careful diagnostic evaluation.
