Lipodystrophy

Meaning

Lipodystrophy describes a group of rare disorders characterized by the abnormal or selective loss of adipose tissue, which can be congenital or acquired, significantly impacting metabolic and endocrine health. This condition alters fat distribution, often leading to ectopic fat deposition in visceral or hepatic tissues, which drives insulin resistance. It represents a severe dysregulation of adipocyte biology.
