Lipid Peroxidation Defense

Meaning

Lipid peroxidation defense is the integrated network of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant mechanisms employed by the cell to prevent or neutralize the oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) to polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) within cell membranes and lipoproteins. This defense system is paramount for preserving cellular membrane integrity, preventing the generation of toxic lipid aldehydes, and maintaining overall cellular function. A compromised defense capacity is a hallmark of accelerated aging and chronic disease.
