Lipid Oxidation

Meaning

Lipid oxidation is a biochemical process involving the degradation of lipids, particularly polyunsaturated fatty acids, by reactive oxygen species or free radicals. This non-enzymatic chain reaction alters lipid structure, generating hydroperoxides and secondary breakdown products like malondialdehyde and 4-hydroxynonenal. This process is fundamental in cellular aging and disease pathology.
