Lipid Accumulation Product

Meaning

The Lipid Accumulation Product (LAP) is a clinically derived index used to estimate the accumulation of visceral adipose tissue and its associated metabolic risk, serving as a superior marker for central fat distribution compared to simple Body Mass Index (BMI). Calculated from waist circumference and fasting triglyceride levels, LAP reflects the combined physiological burden of excess abdominal fat and dyslipidemia. Elevated LAP values are strongly correlated with insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease risk, and hormonal imbalances like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hypogonadism. It is a powerful, non-invasive indicator of metabolic health.
