Liothyronine Therapy

Meaning

The clinical use of synthetic triiodothyronine (T3), known chemically as liothyronine, to treat hypothyroidism or to optimize thyroid hormone status in patients who may not fully benefit from levothyroxine (T4) monotherapy. Liothyronine is the biologically active form of thyroid hormone, directly engaging nuclear receptors to regulate gene transcription and metabolic rate across nearly all body tissues. This therapeutic approach requires careful titration due to its short half-life and potent physiological effects.
