This concept is derived from chronobiology and photobiology, founded on the discovery of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) that contain the photopigment melanopsin, which is highly sensitive to blue light. These cells communicate directly with the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the body’s master clock. The clinical relevance emerged with the understanding that modern artificial lighting, particularly LED and screen light, profoundly disrupts the natural light-dark cycle, leading to widespread circadian misalignment.
Mechanism
The mechanism centers on the non-visual effects of light on the SCN. Exposure to short-wavelength (blue) light during the day signals “daytime” to the SCN, promoting alertness and suppressing melatonin production. Conversely, minimizing blue light exposure in the evening signals “nighttime,” allowing the pineal gland to initiate the nocturnal rise in melatonin. Effective light frequency management acts as a powerful zeitgeber, or time-giver, to synchronize the central clock, thereby regulating the downstream, rhythmic release of cortisol, growth hormone, and other endocrine signals crucial for restoration and metabolism.
