Light Exposure Synchronization

Meaning

Light Exposure Synchronization is the deliberate and strategic use of light, particularly specific wavelengths and timing, to align the body’s internal biological clock with the 24-hour solar day. This process, also known as photoentrainment, is the most potent non-photic zeitgeber for regulating the master circadian pacemaker in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Proper synchronization is essential for maintaining optimal hormonal rhythms, including the diurnal cortisol curve and the nocturnal melatonin release, thereby supporting sleep quality, mood, and metabolic health. Misaligned light exposure, such as bright light late at night, can induce chronodisruption.
