Light as Zeitgeber

Meaning

Light as Zeitgeber refers to the role of light, particularly specific wavelengths and intensities, as the most potent external cue, or Zeitgeber (German for ‘time-giver’), used to synchronize the body’s internal circadian clock. Appropriate exposure to light, especially bright light in the morning, is essential for regulating the precise timing of numerous physiological processes, including the critical diurnal secretion of cortisol and the nocturnal release of melatonin. This external signal is crucial for maintaining the body’s alignment with the 24-hour day.
