Ligand Binding

Meaning

Ligand binding is the fundamental molecular event where a signaling molecule, such as a hormone, neurotransmitter, or nutrient metabolite, physically associates with a specific receptor protein on a cell surface or within the cytoplasm or nucleus. This association is the prerequisite for initiating any downstream cellular response, including the modulation of gene expression characteristic of steroid hormones. The affinity and specificity of this binding determine the biological potency of the ligand.
