Meaning

LH Receptor Desensitization is a critical physiological phenomenon where the cells possessing the Luteinizing Hormone (LH) receptor, primarily the Leydig cells in the testes, exhibit a reduced responsiveness to LH stimulation. This loss of sensitivity is typically induced by prolonged or excessively high concentrations of the LH ligand or an LH-mimicking agent, such as Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG). The desensitization acts as a protective, homeostatic mechanism that prevents overstimulation of the gonads. Clinically, it can lead to a reduced steroidogenic response and a subsequent decrease in endogenous sex hormone production over time, necessitating careful consideration in dosing protocols for gonadotropin-based therapies.
