Leydig Cell

Meaning

Leydig Cells are specialized interstitial cells found within the testes of males, situated adjacent to the seminiferous tubules, and are the primary source of endogenous testosterone production. These crucial endocrine cells are responsible for synthesizing and secreting the majority of circulating testosterone in response to luteinizing hormone (LH) stimulation from the pituitary gland. Their optimal function is paramount for male reproductive health, the development of secondary sexual characteristics, and the maintenance of lean muscle mass, bone density, and overall vigor. Impaired Leydig cell function is a key factor in hypogonadism.
