Leydig Cell Sensitivity

Meaning

Leydig cell sensitivity is the degree of responsiveness of the testicular Leydig cells to the pulsatile stimulation by Luteinizing Hormone (LH) secreted from the anterior pituitary gland. This responsiveness is the key determinant of the rate of testosterone biosynthesis and secretion in the male. Diminished sensitivity necessitates higher LH levels to achieve adequate testosterone production, which is a common physiological challenge in the context of male hormonal aging or chronic metabolic stress.
