Leydig Cell Responsiveness

Meaning

Leydig cell responsiveness refers to the functional capacity of the Leydig cells within the testes to synthesize and secrete adequate amounts of testosterone in response to stimulation by Luteinizing Hormone (LH) from the anterior pituitary. This metric is a direct indicator of testicular endocrine function and is essential for male hormonal health, fertility, and maintenance of secondary sexual characteristics. Diminished responsiveness often signals primary hypogonadism or cellular aging.
