Leydig Cell Function

Meaning

Leydig cell function refers to the specialized endocrine activity of the Leydig cells, which are interstitial cells located adjacent to the seminiferous tubules in the testes. Their primary and most critical role is the synthesis and secretion of the androgen testosterone in males. Optimal Leydig cell function is essential for spermatogenesis, the maintenance of male secondary sexual characteristics, and systemic metabolic health. Dysfunction in these cells leads directly to primary hypogonadism, characterized by low testosterone levels despite high gonadotropin stimulation.
