Leydig Cell Exhaustion

Meaning

Leydig cell exhaustion describes a state of functional decline in the Leydig cells, the primary testosterone-producing cells located in the testes, resulting in an inadequate hormonal response to Luteinizing Hormone (LH) stimulation. This condition is a form of primary hypogonadism, characterized by diminished testosterone synthesis and secretion, often observed in the context of advanced aging, chronic illness, or prolonged exogenous hormone suppression. The resultant low testosterone can lead to symptoms like fatigue and reduced libido.
