Leydig Cell Damage

Meaning

Leydig Cell Damage refers to any structural or functional impairment of the Leydig cells, which are the primary steroidogenic cells located in the interstitial tissue of the testes. Since these cells are responsible for the synthesis and secretion of testosterone in males, their damage leads directly to primary hypogonadism, characterized by low testosterone levels and often elevated luteinizing hormone (LH). Etiologies range from direct testicular trauma, infection, autoimmune disorders, to exposure to toxins or certain pharmacological agents.
