Levothyroxine Therapy

Meaning

Levothyroxine therapy is the standard clinical treatment for hypothyroidism, involving the oral administration of a synthetic form of the primary thyroid hormone, thyroxine (T4). This pharmaceutical is chemically identical to the T4 naturally produced by the human thyroid gland. The therapeutic goal is to restore euthyroidism by providing adequate circulating T4, which the body can then convert into the biologically active T3. Successful management requires precise, individualized dosing to normalize serum Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels and alleviate the systemic symptoms of hormone deficiency.
