Levothyroxine

Meaning

Levothyroxine is a synthetic pharmaceutical agent that is a chemically pure, levorotatory preparation of the thyroid hormone thyroxine, or T4, which is structurally identical to the hormone naturally produced by the human thyroid gland. It is the gold standard and most commonly prescribed medication for the clinical management of hypothyroidism, a condition resulting from insufficient thyroid hormone production. Precise, individualized dosing of levothyroxine is critical for restoring euthyroid status, thereby regulating the body’s overall basal metabolic rate, energy production, and temperature regulation.
