Leptin Signaling Resistance

Meaning

Leptin Signaling Resistance is an endocrine condition where the hypothalamus and other target tissues fail to appropriately respond to the satiety and energy-regulating signals of the hormone leptin, despite high circulating levels. Leptin, produced by adipose tissue, normally signals sufficient energy stores and suppresses appetite, but in this resistant state, the brain perceives a state of energy deficit or starvation. This pathological miscommunication is a key driver of chronic overeating, reduced energy expenditure, and the perpetuation of obesity.
