LEADER Trial

Meaning

The LEADER Trial, or Liraglutide Effect and Action in Diabetes: Evaluation of Cardiovascular Outcome Results, was a landmark, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial investigating the cardiovascular safety and efficacy of the GLP-1 receptor agonist liraglutide in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and high cardiovascular risk. The study provided critical data regarding the pleiotropic effects of this class of drug beyond glycemic control. Its findings have significantly influenced clinical guidelines for diabetes management and cardiovascular risk reduction. This trial established a new standard for anti-diabetic drug evaluation.
