Ldlr

Meaning

LDLR is the succinct acronym for the Low-Density Lipoprotein Receptor, a critical cell surface protein predominantly expressed on the surface of liver cells and various peripheral tissues. Its fundamental biological function is to specifically bind and internalize circulating Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) particles, thereby serving as the primary regulator of plasma cholesterol levels. Dysfunction or genetic deficiency of this receptor is the primary cause of familial hypercholesterolemia and significantly increases an individual’s lifetime cardiovascular risk.
