Latent Hypothyroidism

Meaning

Latent Hypothyroidism, clinically known as Subclinical Hypothyroidism, describes a mild, early stage of thyroid dysfunction where the peripheral thyroid hormone levels, specifically free thyroxine (fT4), remain within the established normal reference range. However, the pituitary gland’s Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) concentration is found to be mildly or moderately elevated. This elevation signifies that the thyroid gland requires excessive TSH stimulation to maintain adequate hormone output, indicating a nascent failure. Although often asymptomatic, this condition can progress to overt hypothyroidism and is associated with subtle but important cardiovascular and metabolic risks.
