Lamina Propria

Meaning

The lamina propria is a layer of loose connective tissue that underlies the epithelial lining of the mucous membranes throughout the body, including the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and urogenital tracts, and importantly, the vocal folds. This layer is richly vascularized, contains numerous immune cells, and provides essential structural and nutritional support to the overlying epithelium. Its composition, particularly its collagen and elastin content, is highly responsive to hormonal fluctuations, influencing the function and resilience of the tissues it supports.
