LAL Test

Meaning

The Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) Test is a highly sensitive in vitro method for detecting and quantifying bacterial endotoxins, specifically lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from Gram-negative bacteria. These endotoxins can induce fever, inflammation, and septic shock. The test uses a lysate from horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) amebocytes, reacting uniquely with endotoxins.
