L-Type Calcium Channels

Meaning

L-Type Calcium Channels are a class of voltage-gated ion channels found in the cell membranes of excitable tissues, including cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and endocrine cells. The “L” stands for “long-lasting,” referring to the sustained influx of calcium ions (Ca²⁺) that occurs upon their activation. These channels are critical mediators of muscle contraction and are key regulators of hormone secretion.
