L-Cells

Meaning

L-Cells are specialized enteroendocrine cells primarily located in the distal small intestine (ileum) and the large intestine (colon), which function as chemosensors of the luminal contents, particularly responding to the presence of unabsorbed nutrients like carbohydrates and fats. Their critical function is the rapid secretion of multiple gut hormones, most notably Glucagon-like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) and Peptide YY (PYY), which are key regulators of glucose homeostasis, satiety, and gastrointestinal motility. They are a central component of the gut-brain-hormone axis.
