KNDy Neurons

Meaning

KNDy neurons are a specialized population of neurons located in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus that serve as a central regulator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, particularly controlling the pulsatile release of GnRH. These neurons co-express three critical neuropeptides: Kisspeptin, Neurokinin B (NKB), and Dynorphin (Dyn), which collectively modulate the timing and amplitude of GnRH secretion. They are essential for the initiation of puberty, maintenance of fertility, and the physiological response to hormonal feedback.
