KNDy Neuronal Network

Meaning

The KNDy Neuronal Network is a critical cluster of specialized neurons located in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus, playing an essential role in regulating the pulsatile release of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH). This network is uniquely defined by its co-expression of three key neuropeptides: kisspeptin (K), neurokinin B (N), and dynorphin (Dy), which collectively modulate the central control of the reproductive endocrine axis. The KNDy neurons act as the central gatekeeper, integrating metabolic and environmental signals to dictate the timing and amplitude of reproductive hormone secretion. Dysfunction in this network is implicated in various reproductive disorders, including hypothalamic amenorrhea and some forms of infertility.
