KNDy Neuron Complex

Meaning

The KNDy Neuron Complex is a vital, integrated cluster of neuroendocrine cells located specifically in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus, which serves as the central pulse generator for the reproductive axis. These neurons are defined by their co-expression of three key neuropeptides: kisspeptin, neurokinin B (NKB), and dynorphin (Dyn), from which the acronym KNDy is derived. This complex is the essential regulatory node that integrates metabolic, stress, and gonadal hormonal feedback signals to precisely control the pulsatile release of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH). It is indispensable for the onset of puberty and the maintenance of fertility throughout the lifespan.
