KNDy Neuron

Meaning

The KNDy Neuron is a specialized subpopulation of neurosecretory cells located within the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus, uniquely characterized by the co-expression of three distinct neuropeptides: kisspeptin, neurokinin B (NKB), and dynorphin. These neurons are widely recognized as the central pulse generator for the reproductive axis, playing a critical, integrative role in regulating the pulsatile secretion of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH). They function as a key sensor, integrating feedback from sex steroids, metabolic status, and environmental cues to link energy balance and hormonal milieu to reproductive function. The integrity of the KNDy neuron population is paramount for maintaining HPG axis homeostasis and fertility.
