Kisspeptin Suppression

Meaning

Kisspeptin suppression refers to the pharmacological or physiological inhibition of the neuropeptide kisspeptin, which is a master regulator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, the primary control system for reproductive and sexual hormones. Kisspeptin is crucial because it drives the pulsatile release of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH), which subsequently stimulates the production of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH). Clinical suppression of this pathway is a therapeutic strategy used to manage hormone-sensitive conditions, such as precocious puberty in children or certain forms of reproductive-hormone-dependent disorders, by temporarily dampening the downstream production of sex steroids.
