KISS1 Neurons

Meaning

KISS1 Neurons are a distinct population of specialized neurons located primarily in the hypothalamus, which serve as the crucial upstream gatekeepers and integrators of the reproductive endocrine axis. These cells synthesize and secrete kisspeptin, a neuropeptide that acts as the most potent known stimulator of GnRH release from the hypothalamic nerve terminals. They are essential for initiating puberty and regulating the pulsatile release of GnRH, which in turn controls the downstream secretion of LH and FSH.
