KISS1

Meaning

The gene that encodes the neuropeptide kisspeptin, a master regulator of the reproductive axis in humans and other mammals. Kisspeptin acts as the primary gatekeeper for the onset of puberty and the control of fertility throughout life by directly stimulating the release of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH). It is a pivotal signaling molecule linking metabolic and environmental cues to reproductive function.
