Ketone Production

Meaning

Ketone production, or ketogenesis, is the metabolic process occurring primarily in the liver where fatty acids are broken down to form ketone bodies—namely acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone. This pathway is activated when carbohydrate availability is low, such as during prolonged fasting, strenuous exercise, or adherence to a ketogenic diet. Ketone bodies serve as an alternative, highly efficient fuel source for extrahepatic tissues, most notably the brain. This metabolic shift is a crucial adaptive mechanism for energy survival.
