Ketone Energy Metabolism

Meaning

A metabolic state where the liver produces ketone bodies—acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), and acetone—from fatty acid breakdown, which are then utilized by extrahepatic tissues, notably the brain, as a primary or supplemental energy source. This process, known as ketogenesis, is typically activated during periods of carbohydrate restriction or fasting when insulin levels are low and glucagon levels are elevated. It represents a fundamental shift in the body’s fuel preference.
